We often hear that creativity comes from the right brain, but this is a myth. To create, we need to use both our brain hemispheres and have a good interplay between them.
As most people know, our fantastic brain is divided into two brain hemispheres with dominance for different functions. These are in intense contact with each other and the constant interaction between them makes us into the complex beings we are with intellect, thoughts, feelings and a fantastic ability to create and to perceive all the nuances of the world.

Ofta hör vi att kreativiteten utgår från den högra hjärnhalvan, men detta är en myt. För att skapa behöver vi använda båda våra hjärnhalvor och ha ett gott samspel mellan dem.
Som de flesta vet så är vår fantastiska hjärna uppdelad i två hjärnhalvor med dominans för olika funktioner. Every single experience of what has happened to you took place within your own mind as reflections and interpretations of sensory information that have reached you from the external world around you. While this flow of sensory information is partly beyond your control, you still have a choice of what you expose yourself to. Reading books, meeting new people, experiencing nature are all within the range of your possibilities, and are all bringing you new sensory information, and thus novel experiences.

Sometimes the creative thinking process is flowing without us really knowing how it works, but at least as often we may get stuck and don’t really know how to proceed. In these situations, different stimuli such as words, images, objects, etc. can be very effective in sparking the associations and thus the flow of ideas. Most effective are unrelated stimuli, which should be as different and distant as possible from your problem to really get you thinking completely outside the box.

Ibland flödar den kreativa tankeprocessen utan att vi riktigt vet hur det går till, men minst lika ofta fastnar vi och vet inte riktigt hur vi ska gå vidare. I början av mitt eget kreativa utforskande återkom jag ständigt till frågan vad det egentligen är att vara kreativ. Går det att definiera en viss kreativ förmåga? Det finns ju så många kreativa personer – uppfinnare, musiker, konstnärer – så det borde ju gå att borra sig ner till en gemensam nämnare, den magiska silverkulan, en förmåga som är gemensam för alla kreativa människor.
At the beginning of my own creative exploration, I constantly returned to the question what it really is to be creative. Is it possible to define a certain creative ability? There are so many highly creative people – inventors, musicians, artists – so it should be possible to drill down to a common denominator, the magic silver bullet, a creative ability common to all creative human beings. But the more I learned about the different aspects of creativity, the more I realised that this was a side-track. There is not a single creative ability but a whole row of them, and it’s only when several of these interact and reinforce each other as we really can utilise our full creative potential.
