Sometimes bizarre jokes and other unexpected and unrelated input could act as stimuli to come up with new and simple solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems.

The concept of lateral thinking was introduced in the 1960s by the Maltese physician and creativity educator Edward de Bono, who has written more than 50 books on thinking and creativity. The concept of lateral thinking is based on finding as many answers as possible (divergent thinking). This is done by considering as many different choices as possible, some of which may be incorrect. The thinking is provocative and the solutions should be completely unexpected.

Utanför lådan-lösning: Hugga benen av de anställda

Ibland kan bisarra skämt eller oväntade och orelaterade intryck fungera som stimulus för att komma upp med nya och enkla lösningar på till synes olösliga problem.

Begreppet lateralt tänkande  introducerades på 1960-talet av den maltesiske läkaren och kreativitetsfolkbildaren Edward de Bono, som skrivit mer än 50 böcker om tänkande och kreativitet. Det laterala tänkandet bygger på att hitta så många svar som möjligt (divergent tänkande). Detta sker genom att betrakta så många olika vägval som möjligt, varav en del kan vara felaktiga. Tänkandet är provokativt och lösningarna ska vara helt oväntade.

At the beginning of a creative project, it may therefore be helpful to interview as many people as possible to try and make them express not only their obvious needs but also their latent, indirect and unconscious needs. Already Henry Ford realized in the early days of the automotive industry that if he asked people what they wanted, they would have answered “A faster horse”.

Five tips to get your creativity off ground

Sometimes the creative thinking process is flowing without us really knowing how it works, but at least as often we may get stuck and don’t really know how to proceed. In these situations, different stimuli such as words, images, objects, etc. can be very effective in sparking the associations and thus the flow of ideas. Most effective are unrelated stimuli, which should be as different and distant as possible from your problem to really get you thinking completely outside the box.
